semantics

The emergence of Web2 has created household names of MySpace, YouTube and Facebook.

These businesses were not on any corporate radar during Web1. They operated in ways that were new, unexpected and, in less than five years, have redefined the way in which the web is used. Web3 will have a similar impact.

The introduction of Semantics will change the way people relate to the web. Semantic technology will replace simplistic free text searching with tools that understand words in the context they are being used. Our searches will find what we really want and not the plethora of meaningless hits, which by accident have the same free text entries. Semantic technology gives the opportunity for new organisations to wear the mantle of industry leader. Google’s dominance in free text searching will be diminished by the emergence of leaders in market specific intelligent search engines, sitting on their own corpus of data.

In Web3, when we want to find information, we will go to the de-facto player in that market, not a generic search engine. The new household names in Web3 are not on anyone’s corporate radar today. Yet they all have certain characteristics that mark them apart from the rest. They believe they can participate in Web3; they have the strategic intent to lead their market and they have true vision.

The barrier to entry here won’t be cash or the killer application. It will be understanding how to take the concept to market!
